We have a number of good reasons for thinking that the American experience has never really been profoundly malignant.
1. The capacity for healthy popular dissent and opposition to war, as well as anti-war movements, have been robust and long-lived for most of the country’s history. If anything, the American political system has been over-corrective.

This isn’t to say that racism isn’t a significant problem and can’t do real damage to the country. But the country has a long history of being over-corrective on the one hand, and for the great majority of the country’s history, over-corrective on the other.
4. The country’s immigrant population and domestic black population (which is also diverse) have benefited from a combination of anti-discrimination law, progressive taxation and government social policies designed to eliminate economic and social marginalization.
5. The country’s anti-war movement has been very vocal, successful and popular, from the Vietnam War to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. For the most part, the country’s military has done pretty well, too.
6. Before the reforms of the New Deal, the “American dream” was generally available to the country’s poor. For the great majority of the country’s history, the country’s big gap between rich and poor
